If you’re planning a new website, chances are you’ve heard of WordPress, and more recently, Headless CMS. But what are the actual differences? And why are more businesses making the switch to Headless?
At Wilkes Wood, we’ve recently moved to Headless by default for the sites we build. Here’s why - and how to decide what’s right for you.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is a traditional CMS (Content Management System) that powers over 40% of websites on the internet. It’s open-source, widely supported, and offers thousands of plugins and themes to help customise your site.
In a traditional CMS like WordPress, everything is tightly coupled — content, design, and code all live together in one monolithic system.
That’s great for speed and simplicity when starting out, but it can become restrictive as your website and technical needs grow.
What is Headless CMS?
A Headless CMS separates your content (the “body”) from your presentation layer (the “head”).
Instead of being locked into one frontend (like a WordPress theme), you can publish your content anywhere, to a website, app, email platform, digital signage, or all of them at once.
Content is stored and managed via an API, giving developers much more flexibility in how things are built, displayed, and scaled.

Why We’ve Chosen Headless
At Wilkes Wood, we’ve made the move to Headless as our default architecture for client websites. Here’s why:
Speed & Performance
Sites built on Headless frameworks are often faster than traditional ones. That means quicker load times, better Core Web Vitals, and improved user experience — which also supports your SEO performance.
Security & Stability
By decoupling your CMS from your live site, we significantly reduce the risk of common WordPress-related vulnerabilities (like outdated plugins or brute force login attacks).
Future-Proof Flexibility
Need to scale? Launch a microsite? Add new functionality? Headless lets you build modularly — adding and upgrading features without breaking your whole site.
Seamless Content Editing
Paired with powerful CMS platforms like Sanity, Headless setups can still be incredibly user-friendly. We configure the backend so your team can update content without ever touching code.
Integrations & Interactive Features
If your site needs to connect to APIs, visualise data, or incorporate dynamic features Headless offers a more flexible base for building unique frontend experiences.
Already on WordPress? Moving to Headless Is Easier Than You Think
If you're currently running a WordPress site, moving to a Headless setup might sound like a big leap — but it doesn't have to be.
We’ve helped clients seamlessly migrate their content, preserve their SEO rankings, and modernise their digital presence without starting from scratch.
With the right approach, we can:
- Map and migrate your entire content library
- Replicate (or redesign) your site structure for better UX
- Maintain URLs and metadata to avoid SEO disruption
- Introduce new features without rebuilding everything
- Give your team an editor that’s cleaner, faster, and easier to use
You’ll keep the content and structure you rely on — but gain a modern, flexible, performance-first setup that’s ready for what’s next.
If you’re curious about what a move could look like for your business, we’d be happy to walk you through it, and show you some real world examples too.
Still Not Sure? We Can Help
WordPress is a fantastic tool for many websites — particularly for small sites, brochure builds, or where off-the-shelf templates do the job.
But if you’re looking for a more scalable, flexible, and performance-driven solution — or you’re planning a rebuild and want to set yourself up for long-term growth — Headless might be exactly what you need.
Let’s Talk
Whether you’re just starting out or planning a full-scale rebuild, we’re here to help you figure out the best approach.
